Project: Shutter speed and panning

The objective of this project was to photograph moving objects with different shutter speed while following the movement with camera (panning). I selected the same subject as with my previous project about shutter speed i.e. moving cars. To photograph the cars I used ‘S’ -mode which allows me to select shutter speed while camera select aperture for correct exposure.

I started with fast shutter speeds and proceed to longer shutter speeds untill I could not follow the subject accurately to get sharp pictures. With fast shutter speed it is very easy to do panning and get sharp results but such pictures have also sharp background and they lack the feeling of movement. With longer exposure time the movement was more visible but it also was more difficult to do the panning so that the intended subject stay sharp. It’s difficult to say which speed is the limit because it depends also of the distance, speed and size of the subject. (more…)

Project Shutter: Speed and movement

This exercise is about shutter speed and photographing moving objects. I wanted to have a slower target than cars but I had no volunteers to do for example drive circles with a bike. So, I chose to photograph cars on a nearby motorway. The speed limit is 100km/h and I have no reason to doubt that the cars were doing that speed.

I took pictures of passing cars with different shutter speeds. The intention was to keep the camera still on a tripod and actuate the shutter when a car passes the camera.

I started with a long time, 1/8. Longer times were not possible because the picture would be over exposed. (more…)
